Jedi Master Vandar Tokare was a male of the same mysterious species as Master Yoda or Yaddle, and member of the Dantooine Enclave’s Council d uring the Mandalorian Wars and Jedi Civil War, though he held a seat on the High Council as well during his naturally long lifespan. His first emergence into the Star Wars Universe would be Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, though he would make regular appearances in the Knights of the Old Republic Dark Horse Comic, as well as a minor role in Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Before the Wars – The Fate of a Padawan As was commonplace between the two Jedi Masters and close friends, Vandar and Vrook Lamar came into conflict over a young Padawan training in the Dantooine Enclave, an individual who would later become a Jedi General of the Revanchist movement, detonating the Mass Shadow Generator on Malachor V, and, as a consequence for her choice to follow Revan to War, becoming the Jedi Exile. Vrook was incensed by the Padawan’s interactions with her peers, inspiring an unquestioning fellowship in some, and causing tempers to flare and conflict with her in others. Due to the fact that her Master would not set a discipline for her behavior, Vrook approached Vandar to assess his intentions for punishment. Instead of interpreting the social activity as a basis for the Dark Side, as Vrook had, Master Tokare viewed it as a unique gift of leadership, and informed Vrook that while his wisdom was valued in all matters, the Padawan was none of his concern. Mandalorian Wars – An Order Divided Master Vandar was at the center for much of the turmoil that would lead up to the Mandalorian Wars as leader of the Jedi Enclave and teacher of a large majority of padawans, most notably in the investigation of Lucien Draay’s rise in the Council, and the revelation of the Jedi Covenant’s part in the Padawan Massacre of Taris. Alek Squinquargesimus, under the alias “Captain Malak”, and Shel Jelavan contacted the wizened Jedi Master, informing him of Zayne Carrick’s innocence, and the use of the Murr Talisman by Covenant member Celeste Morne. Vandar, accompanied by his old friend Vrook, met with the two in a lower city cantina on Coruscant, where they began to build a case against the Jedi Covenant, and Krynda Draay, with the appearance of Xamar, a renegade member of the Covenant who was willing to testify his guilt in killing his own Padawan. Afterwards, Vandar commissioned Vrook to lead an attack on the Draay estate, which would not end well for the Jedi Master or his strike force. Jedi Civil War – Faith in the Fallen As Revan returned to known space in the guise of a Sith Lord, Vandar and his fellow Council members began fighting a war for what remained of the Republic, combating their former student, whom they viewed as their responsibility. When Revan was captured by a Jedi strike team lead by Bastila Shan, he was taken back to the council, who decided to wipe his memory, and replace it with the identity of a simple Republic soldier, giving him duties under Bastila Shan. However, due to his heroics in rescuing Bastila following the attack on the Endar Spire over Taris, and escaping the destruction of the metropolitan planet, Bastila herself requested that he be trained in the ways of the Jedi once more. Though there was much debate on the matter, Vandar would be the one to decide for it, believing the visions that he and Bastila shared to be a valuable asset in discovering the weaknesses of Darth Malak, and winning the war. Near the end of Revan’s journey to find the Star Forge, the Dantooine Enclave was attacked, and many of its occupants killed. Though the crew of the Ebon Hawk believed him to be dead, Vandar survived, and would reappear along with the Republic Fleet during the attack on the Star Forge. Following the Victory against the Sith Forces, and the destruction of the Forge, Vandar would present Revan and his crew with Crosses of Glory. Little is known about Vandar’s activities immediately following this, but it is suspected that he began efforts to help rebuild the Jedi Order, an effort that would end abruptly on Katarr, where he lost his life to an attack through the Force by Darth Nihilus, along with several other Jedi’s, during a conclave to try and see the new threat emerging and killing Jedi Knights across the galaxy. Personality and Traits Vandar was a voice of compassion and wisdom within the Jedi Order, often acting as the final decision maker of both the Dantooine Enclave Council, as well as the Jedi High Council on Coruscant. His belief in redemption and forgiveness would lead him to make choices that would eventually bring about a drastic shift in the shape of the Galaxy. The ancient Jedi Master was close friends with Vrook Lamar, though the two rather saw eye to eye, as Vrook had little compassion for those that had fallen to the Dark Side, and Vandar was more tolerant and open minded about mistakes made, no matter the size or severity. While his power is never exhibited, it is inferred that, like his successor and counterpart, Jedi Master Yoda, Vandar was deceptively powerful in his own right, commanding the Force unlike many before him, and wielding two short lightsabers with a proficient Ataru technique. |
